Pledges to Develop Next Generation of Farm Level Sustainability Metrics to Help Growers Measure and Deliver Sustained Reductions in Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture announced today a pledge to support USDA’s climate smart agriculture initiative by developing the next generation of farm level sustainability metrics to help farmers measure and deliver sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

“Perhaps no other industry is more affected by climate change than agriculture, which is why farmers are committed to reducing their environmental impacts and maximizing the resiliency of crop production in the face of these challenges,” said Rod Snyder, president of Field to Market. “We are proud to partner with USDA by helping growers measure and deliver sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by better understanding the environmental impacts of different farming practices.”

Over the next eighteen months, Field to Market will work with its more than 70 member organizations across the agricultural supply chain—from grower organizations, agribusinesses and academia to conservation organizations, public sector partners and food, beverage and retail companies—to update a series of farm level sustainability metrics, including a more refined methodology for measuring progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from commodity crop production.

Through the development of this next generation of sustainability assessment tools, Field to Market and its members will partner with growers at the field level to track environmental impacts, identify opportunities for continuous improvement, and help deliver sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. cropland per unit of output.

To achieve these outcomes, Field to Market’s members will continue scaling their supply chain engagement with a goal of enrolling 50 million acres of U.S. commodity crop production in the Field to Market supply chain sustainability program by 2020.
