Three New Members Named to Field to Market’s Science Advisory Council

December 18, 2018

Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture recently appointed three new members to the Science Advisory Council. The Council provides expert guidance to Field to Market’s membership that will ensure the best available science underpins the Alliance’s science-based approach to delivering sustainable outcomes at the field and landscape levels.

The 12-member council includes outstanding representatives from diverse scientific disciplines who lend their knowledge and expertise to guide Field to Market’s board, staff and diverse membership from across the food and agricultural supply chain as they continue to develop a program that helps catalyze continuous improvement in environmental outcomes of U.S. commodity crop production.

“We are delighted to welcome this distinguished group of experts to our advisory council,” said Rod Snyder, Field to Market president. “The Alliance will benefit greatly from their insight and experience.”

The recently appointed council members are:

  • Dr. Thomas Green is a leader in market-based sustainability initiatives and integrated pest management (IPM). He is president and co-founder of the IPM Institute of North America, a non-profit working to leverage marketplace power to improve health, environment and economics in agriculture and communities. Dr. Green was awarded the Entomological Foundation’s Medal of Honor in 2015. He is a certified crop adviser and a USDA NRCS-certified technical service provider. Dr. Green holds a Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Massachusetts and has authored or co-authored more than 100 publications and presented at more than 250 professional and industry events.
  • Dr. Kris Johnson is the Associate Director for Science & Planning for The Nature Conservancy’s North America Agriculture Program. In this role, he leads efforts to integrate science into collaborations with public and private partners to catalyze conservation and improved agricultural management across North America. Previously, Dr. Johnson served as the Sustainability Scientist at the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment. He received a B.S. from Bowdoin College and a M.S. and Ph.D. in conservation biology from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Johnson was a Fulbright Scholar, a MacArthur Scholar and remains a University of Minnesota Senior Fellow in Sustainable Agricultural Systems.
  • Dr. Linda Prokopy is the director of the Indiana Water Resources Research Center and a professor in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University. She is an interdisciplinary social scientist who is globally recognized for her work incorporating social science into the fields of agricultural conservation, agricultural adaptation to climate change and watershed management. Dr. Prokopy has developed a successful integrated program focused on the role of human decision making in water resources management. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, generated over $12 million in competitive research funds and mentored numerous graduate students and postdocs.

“These new experts will broaden the wide range of expertise, leadership and experience of our Council to provide independent, science-based guidance as we seek to ensure our approach to measuring, monitoring and reporting on environmental outcomes is grounded in the best available science,” said Allison Thomson, Field to Market’s science and research director.

Field to Market’s program centers around science-based metrics for environmental sustainability that focus on outcomes within a grower’s control: Biodiversity; Energy Use Efficiency; Greenhouse Gas Emissions; Land Use Efficiency; Soil Carbon; Soil Conservation; Water Quality; and Water Use Efficiency.
