Mars Partners with Field to Market to Find Sustainable Solutions

May 16, 2017

Mars, Incorporated announced today that it has joined Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, a multi-stakeholder initiative working to unite the agricultural supply chain in defining, measuring and advancing the sustainability of food, fiber and fuel production.

“Field to Market brings together experts from across the agriculture industry, helping us leverage their knowledge and learn from their successes and challenges when it comes to their supply chain and sustainability efforts,” said Alissa Marturano, Sustainable Sourcing Insights Manager, Mars Chocolate. “This partnership—across Mars Chocolate and Mars Petcare—helps us stay on the cutting edge and work together with powerful organizations to have a lasting impact  on the world.”

Through membership in Field to Market, Mars Chocolate seeks to support continuous improvement in the sustainability of peanuts, a key ingredient in favorite chocolate brands including M&M’S and Snickers.  Mars is collaborating with the American Peanut Council, a fellow Field to Market member, and working with the entire peanut industry to obtain even better sustainability data of peanut production. These efforts will allow the peanut industry to demonstrate progress and drive continuous improvement at the farm level.

Mars Petcare is evaluating and exploring opportunities to develop a Fieldprint Project through Field to Market on grains in the Midwestern region of the United States. The Fieldprint Project will emphasize environmental impacts that are material to its business, such as land and water use.

“We are proud to operate, with great partnerships like Field to Market, in a way that provides a win-win for all those who play a role in our supply chain,” said Courtney Lareau, Global Sustainable Sourcing Insights Manager, Mars Petcare. “Our products, and the ingredients they’re made of, are the heart of our business—and we want to make sure we source and produce them responsibly.”

By joining Field to Market, Mars will work closely with suppliers and experts across the agriculture industry to better understand the peanut and grain supply chain and improve the impact these ingredients have on the environment.

“As one of the world’s largest food companies, Mars has the opportunity to positively influence and catalyze continuous improvement in agricultural production,” said Rod Snyder, president of Field to Market. “We are pleased to welcome Mars to Field to Market and look forward to collaborating on opportunities to advance the sustainability of peanuts and grains used in their chocolate and pet food and share the importance of this work with consumers.”
