Field to Market Seeks Business Manager

Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture seeks a Business Manager to oversee the development and maintenance of the organization’s business strategies, including revenue diversification and licensing of assets.

Field to Market is a 501(c)(3) organization that brings together a diverse alliance of grower groups; agribusiness companies; food, beverage, restaurant and retail companies; conservation groups; universities and public sector partners to focus on promoting, defining and measuring the sustainability of row crops for food, fiber and fuel production.

Position Overview

The Business Manager is responsible for leading and directing Field to Market’s ongoing development of the organization’s business plan. This includes creating strategies for licensing the organization’s assets, including intellectual property and trademarks.

The position will oversee the ongoing development of claims verification protocols to enable Field to Market members to credibly communicate and report on sustainability outcomes from agricultural operations.  The individual will analyze how business opportunities across the food and agriculture supply chain can be leveraged to scale the adoption of Field to Market’s program.

In addition, this position will actively pursue funding opportunities from the philanthropic community, including grant writing.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in strategic business development with a focus on food, agriculture or sustainability. Experience in the non-profit sector with developing business plans, budgeting, and grant writing is desired.  In addition, the individual must demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills; an ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; and a desire and enthusiasm for continuous learning and professional development.

The position reports to the president of Field to Market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct the ongoing development of the organization’s business plan with a focus on revenue diversification and licensing of Field to Market assets.
  • Analyze business implications of Field to Market’s policy decision on the larger food and agriculture supply chain, including maximizing opportunities for shared value and program scale.
  • Interface with Field to Market’s outside counsel on licensing and trademark related issues.
  • Assist with annual budgeting process, including cost and revenue projections.
  • Manage relationships with the philanthropic community including grant writing and grant management.
  • Serve as lead staff for the Field to Market Verification Committee, including overseeing the development of Field to Market’s claims verification and protocols for third-party verifiers.
  • Represent Field to Market by speaking at grower conferences and other agricultural supply chain events throughout the year.

Qualifications

  • Established Track Record:  Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in strategic business development within the food and agriculture industry.
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in business administration with an MBA preferred.
  • Proven experience with developing business plans and budgets for non-profit organizations.
  • Experience with grant writing, fundraising and managing relationship with the philanthropic community.
  • Experienced with licensing of intellectual property or marketing sustainability claims is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to prioritize, establish and meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to coordinate multi-stakeholder teams and build successful interactions.
  • Successful experience in working with a membership-driven organization strongly preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate and influence people across organizations in one-on-one, small team and large audience settings
  • Must have strong command of the English language.
  • Moderate amount of travel is required for this position.  At times travel may be expected on short notice.  Travel and other work related assignments may include weekends.
  • Office location is Washington, DC.
